Eric Lark presents the 12th annual Stephen H. Schulman Outstanding Business Lawyer Award to John R. Trentacosta
Eric Lark, Kerr Russell member, will be presenting the 12th annual Stephen H. Schulman Outstanding Business Lawyer Award to John R. Trentacosta, a longtime partner with Foley & Lardner LLP. The award is chosen by the State Bar of Michigan Business Law Section, and this year’s ceremony will take place at the Section’s annual meeting and Business Law Institute October 6 in Grand Rapids.
Upon becoming Chair of the Business Law Section in 2005, Lark set forth an initiative to establish an award formally recognizing outstanding Michigan business lawyers. The Schulman Award resulted from this effort and, as Lark writes, “honors the Michigan business lawyer who, over his or her career, consistently exemplifies the characteristics the Section seeks to foster and facilitate, namely: the highest quality of professionalism, the highest quality of practice, an unwavering dedication to service, and ethical conduct and collegiality within the practice of law.” Lark served as Chair from 2005 to 2006.
Prior recipients of the Schulman Award include Cy Moscow, the late Martin Oetting, Hugh Makens and Jim Bruno in 2006; Charlie McCallum and Verne Hampton in 2007; Ann Baker in 2008; Justin Klimko in 2009; Alex DeYonker in 2010; Jim Cambridge in 2011; Jeff Ammon in 2012; Dan Minkus in 2013; Diane Akers in 2014, Larry Schultz in 2015; and Timothy Damschroder in 2016.
In an article which appeared on LegalNews.com (August 30, 2017), Trentacosta observes, “When you look at the previous recipients who have been honored, you are looking at some of the biggest names in business law in the state of Michigan over the past few decades. It is very humbling. … I made it a goal of mine early in my career to be published in legal and trade journals whenever I could and to write books. I have been fortunate that being published has allowed me to become known in the industry as a thought leader, which is what you strive for professionally.”
Lark adds, “On behalf of the Section, I thank John for his commitment and dedication to Michigan business law and practice. It’s a thrill to see this award continue to acknowledge such exceptional talent and contributions to our field.”
Kerr Russell Member Kevin Block will be assuming the role of Vice-Chair of the Business Law Section at the Business Law Section’s upcoming annual meeting, after completing his service as Treasurer. Patrick Haddad, member, currently chairs the Business Law Section’s Regulation of Securities Committee. Lark remains active in the Section, serving on the Programs Committee, as Legislative Review Director, and, together with Dan Minkus and Jeff Ammon, as member of the Schulman Award Nominating Committee. Kerr Russell’s Jim Cambridge is also a past Chair of the Business Law Section.
